Lilac is a supporting character in Inverted Fate. She is an orphaned human girl who was Frisk's childhood friend on the surface.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Lilac is a young human girl with red hair, pale skin and freckles. She has purple/dark lilac eyes and wears black, square-rimmed glasses. In addition, she wears a lilac/purple sweater with lilac stripes, white pants and a pair of lilac boots. She is shown in cutscenes to be of similar height to Frisk, or perhaps taller.

Personality[]

Lilac is a kind, compassionate and responsible girl. Her ability to maintain a positive disposition in the face of hardship served as an inspiration for Frisk, who would adopt this tendency from her. She can also be snappy at times, as seen by her indignant reaction when Spamton refers to her as Frisk's "Hochi Mama".

Despite her well-mannered and down-to-earth demeanour, Lilac struggled to get adopted due to her close association and friendship with the "problem child" Frisk, who would often rope her into their escapades. She tried to reign in their delinquent tendencies to limited success.

History[]

Early on in her life, for unknown reasons, Lilac was left at an orphanage, where she was raised for most of her life. While things in her life hardly stayed the same, one thing did remain constant - a kid named Frisk, whom she formed a strong friendship with.

Frisk would then go on to rope Lilac into their escapades, often sneaking out of the orphanage to get into all sorts of mischief. Mischief that ranged from stealing snacks from nearby stores, asking strangers off the streets to adopt them, and many dangerous and reckless antics that gave Frisk the reputation of a "problem child."

Despite this, they remained steadfast in their desire to find belonging and someone to genuinely love them. So, one day, they decided that enough was enough. They hatched a plan to leave to Mt. Ebott, believing that if they were to "disappear," they would gain attention and sympathy through the news, culminating in their eventual adoption. Though hesitant, Lilac agreed, and the two set off for the mountain...

But Lilac got cold feet in the end, fearing for their lives and believing that there were better ways to get adopted. This outraged Frisk, who stubbornly pressed on, and when their friend tried to reason with them, they lashed out, punching the girl and sending her tumbling off a small cliff.

While she fortunately didn't die, she still sustained several serious injuries. While Lilac did manage to finally get adopted, she never heard from Frisk again. Unbeknownst to her, the incident would later prompt them to return to Mt. Ebott and carry out their plan alone, despite the risks.

And it worked. Within days after their disappearance, Frisk's face had been plastered all over the news, the papers and even milk cartons. Having fallen into Mt. Ebott, Frisk embarked on an adventure of their own, but the only thing Lilac knew was that they had gone through with their plan and was missing. So, despite the risks, she decided to head to Mt. Ebott herself in search of her friend.

Main Story[]

Though she doesn't appear until the Final Arc, Lilac is alluded to throughout the story. The guilt and trauma from nearly killing their best friend was a major factor in Frisk's aversion to fighting.

During the Waterfall Arc, Frisk fell from an exploding bridge, losing consciousness upon landing in the dump. While knocked out, they had a flashback of a conversation with Lilac.

Her appearance is revealed in a flashback during Part 38, when Frisk confided in their newfound friend PAPYRUS over their backstory with Lilac, up to and including the incident which nearly resulted in her death.

In the aftermath of the Crisis of Determination, Undyne corners Frisk, who fights back in desperation. This causes the former to melt, which in turn results in her amalgamating with Mettaton when he tries to help. As a guilt-ridden Frisk runs away in tears, a brief flashback of Lilac's broken glasses appears on-screen.

Final Arc[]

Lilac is heard speaking to herself in the stinger of the Final Interlude, regretting not keeping in contact with Frisk. This presumably happens either before she heads to Mt. Ebott, or during the journey there.

After the credits of Part 61, Lilac is well on her way to Mt. Ebott, aboard some form of public transport. While a passenger warned her about a kid going missing near Mt. Ebott, she lied that she was on a research project. Out of earshot, she whispers to herself about how despite everything, she'd finally returned to the mountain, "telling" Frisk to stay safe. Finally having arrived at Mt. Ebott, an image of Lilac climbing it is seen at the end of Asriel's newly reformed intro cutscene.

Following Asriel's destruction of the Barrier, Lilac falls into the Underground, ending up in New Home. She takes the elevator down to Mettaton's hotel (now under new management) where she is accosted by Spamton. This is when she encounters Frisk and their new friend Chara, who intervene to protect her from Spamton.

They travel to the surface, and after they keep going, Lilac's soul gets absorbed by Asriel. Her soulless body is discovered by Spamton, which motivates him to enter the Rift to get revenge. She is later used by Asriel to torment Frisk further by appearing as one of the members of his "church"'s congregation. Following the destruction of the Effigy of Ego, just before the church collapses, her soul is plucked away by Asriel to torment Frisk further. She shows up again when Asriel taunts Frisk with her before leaving. After the destruction of the Pawn of Possessiveness and Chara's Castle, he rants to her about how Frisk stole Chara, and he's getting even. When she fires back with the fact that Asriel refuses to change and has ruined any chance at reconciliation, he silences her again.
